The pearl of Southern Burgenland

Zickenbach

The Zickenbach originates in Burgauberg in the district Halmheu as Rohrer Bach and flows into Güssing near the active park into the Strem (Strembach) The stream also feeds the fish ponds of the Hofmann family. The flow direction is from northwest to southeast. The total length from the source area to the mouth is about 17 km (as the crow flies). It was mainly the agricultural use that shaped the surrounding landscape of the Zickental valley over the centuries. The pond circular hiking trail Ramsar area leads past the Zickenbach.

Documents mention "fluvius zek", the Hungarian name for the Zickenbach and the two torrents Zurnu and Brz. "Zurnu" is derived from the Slavic "Serni (ptok)", which means "Rehgraben".

Within the framework of a project financed by the EU, the Ministry of Life and the Province of Burgenland, about 100 hectares of land have been taken out of agricultural use in recent years. This is now grazed by the "Zickentaler Moorochsen", oxen of the breeds "Galloway" and "Aberdeen Angus", which spend the whole year outdoors and feed exclusively on the grasses and herbs of the pastures.
