Marienstatue an der Grazer Straße

The statue of the Virgin Mary (Marienstatue) is located on the B57, at the intersection Grazer Straße, Josef Reichl-Straße in the direction of St. Nikolaus and bears the inscription "Built by Johann Breitfeller in 1905".

The statue was erected in 1905 by order of Johann Breitfeller, the grandfather of Mrs. Maria Kollarits in maternal line, on his own property. Johann Breitfeller was a master linen weaver, he was considered to be the main driving force behind the establishment of the "Güssing Veterans Association". In 1925 the statue was renovated by master painter Pomper by order of Mr. Matthias Tanczos. On September 6, 1925, the festive guests gathered for the consecration of the bells at the statue of the Virgin Mary and from here they started the procession with the four bells.

According to the Güssinger Zeitung of November 29, 1925, episode 48, Johann Breitfeller was the last weaver in Güssing.

Not secured: Johann Breitfeller was born on 10 February 1853 in Gerersdorf near Güssing.
