Monument Francis Xavier

On the wall of the Franziskanerkirche, on the right side of the gate, which leads to the crypt of the Batthyány family, there is a statue of St. Francis Xavier. On the pedestal there is the double coat of arms of the Batthyány and Illésházy families decorated with a crown. Consequently, the sculpture can be associated with the name of József György Batthyány (1737 - 1806) and his wife Mária Franciska Illésházy (1740 - 1817).

The inscription reminds of the Jesuit missionary St Francis Xavier (1506 - 1552), the "Apostle of the New World": The years in the chronogram are 1737 and 1745 respectively. The statue was probably erected in 1765 at the time of the marriage.

The statue shows St. Francis Xavier in the robe of a Jesuit monk. In the holy hand he holds his attribute, the small cross.
