Hl. Johannes Nepomuk
The figural wayside shrine St. John Nepomuk (Object ID: 28739) is a listed building and is located at the bridge over the Strembach, Schulstraße 2a. Originally, the statue was erected at the end of the 18th century (around 1780). The blessing at the present location (Schulstraße) was performed on 20.10.1996 by the town priest P. Marcellus. In a short ceremony the master of Güssing, LGB Peter Vadasz, presented historical and legendary facts about the life and martyrdom of this saint. The Tromba Quisinia framed the celebration with festive sounds. Renovation: In the 2nd half of 2014, the renovation was carried out by Mr. Josef Antal. Thanks to him the statue of St. Nepomuk at the Strembach Bridge in Schulstraße shines again in new splendour. In laborious detail work the stone base was cleaned from the dirt of many years and provided with a new paint. Furthermore, the pedestal was surrounded by a small green area, the planting of which was made possible by donations from the population.
Extract from contact no. 192 from 1994 by Josef Antal:
RECOVERIES: St. Nepomuk, patron saint of the road patrol and carter, who had guarded the house of Siegert company on the market square, former owner Mrs. Helene Simatovits, for many years, did not leave. St. Nepomuk is (decapitated) in the building yard of the municipality. The new owner of the house wanted to get rid of St. Nepomuk, who had been standing next to the old (now no longer existing) Mühlbach bridge for many years before, because of the wetness of the building. The municipality, or rather the mayor at that time, Ludwig Krammer, promised in the municipal council: St. Nepomuk will be restored and probably get a new guard place at the Strembrücke in Schulstraße. I hope that people will show interest in statues of saints. It could be also for our great personalities from the area of Güssing like: Josef Reichl, Ferenz Faludi, Corvinius Clusius and Johann Manlius. A bust or small monuments could be an honourable memory for these men on the festival meadow and thus bear witness to the cultural awareness of the people of Güssing.
